In this oral history Dr. Virginia Hardy discusses the history of the East Carolina University's Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Center, its move from Brewster Hall to the new Student Union including its renaming to the Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ center, and its directions for the future. Additionally, she discusses the shifts in campus culture related to the LGBTQ community and becoming a part of the nationwide Campus Pride Index.


Biographical/historical information

Dr. Virginia Hardy was born and raised in Greenville, North Carolina. She serves as Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs at East Carolina University. Prior to this role, she served as the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Brody School of Medicine. Hardy also worked as a teacher and assistant principal at Wellcome Middle School in Greenville, North Carolina. She has embraced civic service by serving on the Greenville Utilities Board of Commissioners, Electricities Board of Directors, the Pitt Community College Board of Trustees, the board of the Red Cross of Pitt County, Wildacres Leadership Initiative, and the Z. Smith Reynolds Advisory Panel.


Scope and arrangement

In this oral history Dr. Virginia Hardy discusses the history of the East Carolina University's Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Center, its move from Brewster Hall to the new Student Union including its renaming to the Jesse R. The collection contains an audio file as well as a transcription.
