John (Jack) F. Minges II, an executive at Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co, served as a member of the ECU Board of Trustees from 1977-1985. In the Spring of 1966, East Carolina began construction on a new coliseum, dedicated in honor of the Minges family, which had made the largest private gift to the college at that time. This new facility would host the basketball arena, physical education classrooms, a swimming pool, handball courts. The official dedication ceremony took place on January 27, 1968.
