Dr. Robert Raymond Christian received his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Georgia in 1976. Upon completion of his doctoral degree, Dr. Christian accepted a position at Drexel University, where he remained until 1981. After leaving Drexel University, Dr. Christian was named an Associate Professor of Biology at East Carolina University in 1981 and was given the rank of Professor of Biology in 1985, a position he remained in until his retirement in 2019. During his time at East Carolina University, Dr. Christian also served as the Director of Graduate Studies for Biology, was named a Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor in 2007, as well as a Distinguished Research Professor of Biology in 2003. Dr. Christian also served as a visiting Professor in the Department of Evolutionary Biology at the University of Ferrara, which located in the city of Ferrara, Italy, during the 1991 academic year.
