Biographical/historical information

Melvin Williams earned his Ph.D. from Duke University 1941 in Sociology. He served as a professor at Albion College, Wesleyan College, Florida State University, and Stetson University between 1941 and 1963. He was a professor of Sociology at ECU from 1963 to 1982 and served as the department chair between 1963 and 1970. Dr. Williams was instrumental in the organization of the Sociology and Anthropology Department in 1963 as director of the program. He retired from ECU in 1982 and received Professor Emeritus status.

Scope and arrangement

This collection contains Dr. Williams materials about his work at East Carolina Univeristy and his scholarly research pertaining to sociology and family life. The collection includes his published works including his PhD thesis, essays, book reviews, and presentations, as well as research proposals. The collection also includes materials from his role as a professor and department chair in the Department of Sociology and Athropology at ECU. This includes course proposals and course syllabi for Sociology and Anthropology courses, minutes and reports from university and department committtes he served on, and the Alpha Kappa Delta honor society chapter at ECU. The collection in addition contains personal correspodnence, materials about Dr. Williams involvement in the United Methodist Church, and newspaper clippings.
