Eighteen photographs of Gladys Howard and her friends at East Carolina Teacher's College in the late 1920s.


Biographical/historical information

Gladys Howard was the eldest of five daughters of Asa and Daisy Howard. She was born on August 14, 1902 near Pink Hill in Lenoir County, North Carolina and grew up on her father's tobacco farm. She graduated from Pink Hill High School in 1923 and completed the two year Normal School teaching program at ECTC in 1929. She taught a year at Shine School in Greene County, North Carolina before teaching at Chinquapin School in Chinquapin, North Carolina. While there, she met and married Joseph Williams, a 1929 North Carolina State College Graduate. When they began a family she left teaching to become a tobacco farmer's wife and home maker. They raised two children, Sylvia Anne and Joseph Howard. Gladys was a talented quilt maker and made quilts until her death in 1986.

Eighteen photographs of Gladys Howard and her friends at East Carolina Teacher's College in the late 1920s. Some photographs show the women wearing basketball uniforms.
