He comments on assignment to USS MISSISSIPPI, damage to the ship as result of a severe storm in the North Atlantic, and service in the Pacific after repairs were completed. He also describes training at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as a civil engineer; duty on Guam; and planning and construction assignments at Norfolk, Atlantic City, San Diego, Hawaii, Midway, Easter Island, Johnson Island, and Kwajalein.
