Rear Admiral Van Metre discusses his career from graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1930 until the end of World War II. Of particular concern is duty on the China station prior to W.W. II, duty aboard the U.S.S. NORTH CAROLINA in the South Pacific during the war, and command of the destroyer HILARY P. JONES late in the war.
