Biographical/historical information

A grant funded by the National Library of Medicine of the National Institutes of Health allowed research on "addressing migrant and seasonal farmworker health disparities with information resources" to be completed. This project focuses on improving the daily lives of migrant farmworkers by expanding access to online health information for farmworkers and their families. The three main aims for this project are to identify and make available educational materials for farmworker health, work with farmworker outreach workers on professional development and new technology and provide internet access and training to farmworkers and their families. This collection houses the education materials made available for farmworkers through this program. Partners for this grant include: Laupus Health Sciences Library, NC Farmworker Health Program, ECU College of Health and Human Performance, Student Action with Farmworkers, and the NC State Agromedicine Extension.

Scope and arrangement

Series one holds health education pamphlets printed in Spanish regarding, personal hygiene, diseases, injury prevention, pesticides, drugs and alcohol, legal aid, diabetes, mental health, dental health, sun damage, and health and nutrition centers. These papers are distributed to migrant and Spanish speaking farmworkers in North Carolina.

Series two holds the first addition made to the collection by Wake Forest University faculty. These printed materials, such as flip chart, pamphlets, and even comic strips, were used to educate migrant workers about health and safety specifically related to farmwork. All items were created between 1999-2016 through a series of grants and most are bilingual.

Series three holds digital the digital version of many items in series two.

Series four holds educational materials created by the joint effort of North Carolina State University and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. The creation of these materials was also grant funded and all were created in 2011. Bilingual flip charts, posters, pamphlets, and supplemental material provide detailed information about pesticide safety related to a number of crops grown in North Carolina.
