Dr. Robert Schmidt Fulghum was born on 1929 March 3 to John Hooks Fulghum and Frances Witcraft Schmidt in Washington, DC. He graduated from Roanoke College with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1954. Later, in 1959, he received a Master of Science in Bacteriology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia. He returned ten years later to receive a doctorate degree in both Bacteriology and Biochemistry. Fulghum began his career as an instructor at a medical field service school in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. From 1956 until 1960, Fulghum continued in his educational career path by becoming a graduate assistant at the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station in Blacksburg, Virginia. He would later be elected to the Phi Sigma Honorary Biological Society in 1958. For the next few years, Fulghum would perform as an assistant professor at various universities, including: Susquehanna University, North Dakota State University, and the University of Kentucky. Towards the end of his professional life, Fulghum was welcomed to Pirate Nation as a professor and acting chairman for the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine Department of Microbiology and Immunology. He worked at Brody School of Medicine from 1972 until his retirement in 1996, where he retired with Emeritus status. Fulghum is noted to have aided in the successful regulation of the microbiology and immunology departments. He married his wife, Esther Slagle Fulghum, in the circa 1953 and they were married for 64 years. His military service includes serving in the United States Air Force during the Korean War (1950-1953) and the beginning of the Vietnam War (1952-1956) from which he received an honorable discharge. Sadly, Dr. Fulghum passed away on 2017 November 25. To East Carolina and various universities, Dr. Fulghum was known for his professionalism, compassion, and kind spirit.

The professional life series contains photographs from his experiences as an instructor for various schools, colleges, and universities along with peer reviewed publications, newspaper articles, pamphlets/information sheets from professional workshops, lecture notes, and letter/email correspondence. The personal life series contains retirement letters and farewell cards received from fellow colleagues and universities.
