The North Carolina Public Health Association (NCPHA) was formally founded in 1911 in Charlotte by a group of concerned county superintendents of health in an effort to promote public health in North Carolina. Originally formed as the North Carolina Health Officers' Association, the organization changed its name in April 1921 at its annual meeting. The original constitution and by-laws adopted limited membership to members of state, county, or municipal boards of health or employees of the same.
The North Carolina Public Health Association is an association of individuals and organizations working to improve the public's health through political advocacy, public awareness, professional development, and the interface between research and practice. It is the leading professional association for people dedicated to promoting and protecting the health and environment of all North Carolinians. In 1996, NCPHA was the largest state affiliate of the American Public Health Association.
NCPHA is comprised of several different sections – 11 in 2016: academic/practice-based research; dental health; environmental health, epidemiology, statistics and laboratory; finance, administration, management support, information technology (FAMI); nursing, public health leadership; social networking/public information; social work; wellness and prevention; and women's and children's health.
