In 2001, plans were underway to create a "learning village" for the Division of Health Sciences at East Carolina University. The complex brought the School of Allied Health Sciences, the School of Nursing, and the Laupus Health Sciences Library onto one campus, ultimately easing crowding, fostering collegiality, and uniting departments otherwise dispersed throughout Greenville and beyond. Construction began during a ceremony on 2004 March 26.
