The collection includes various aspects of public health in North Carolina beginning in the early 20th century.
E. (Edward) Daniel "Dan" Shingleton was born in Wilson, North Carolina. He graduated from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) in Wilson with an A.B. (Religion and Philosophy) in 1963. He earned a M.S.W. from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1970. He did additional study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University.
He worked at the Wilson County Department of Social Services and Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro, North Carolina. In 1973 he began working for the North Carolina Division of Public Health, and he retired from there in 1994. His positions included Social Work Consultant, Regional Maternal and Child Health Supervisor, and Acting Regional Health Director (for 13 months). He was a part-time faculty member for over forty years, mainly at Atlantic Christian College/Barton College and then at East Carolina University.
Dan Shingleton continues to be active in the North Carolina Public Health Association (NCPHA) and served on committees and won several awards. In 1990-91 he served as the NCPHA President. In 1993-95 he was the NCPHA Program Development Specialist. In 1990 he also served on two subcommittees of the North Carolina General Assembly's Public Health Study Commission.
He made numerous presentations across North Carolina and published several articles in North Carolina health publications. He served on numerous public health and social work committees.
From the late 1980's to the mid-1990's, he conducted 15 oral history interviews on the history of public health in North Carolina. These are now part of the Laupus Library Oral Health Collection (LL 02.03). He also presented or co-presented four times at the Laupus Library Medical History Interest Group Lectures.
The collection is arranged into five series: people and location files, topics in public health, publications, North Carolina State Board of Health photographs, and Health Heroes Series filmstrips. People and location files include information about specific people who were involved with early public health in North Carolina. Also included are specific counties or towns and their department of health information. Topics in public health files are related to specific issues and include pamphlets, articles, and brochures. Health Heroes Series filmstrips were created for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in the 1940s. The six filmstrip set is in a box originally sent to Frank G. Fuller at Gwynn Park High School in Maryland. Books donated with collection have been removed and cataloged separately.
