William Howard Waugh was born 1925 May 13 in New York City to Richey L. and Lyda L. Waugh. He attended Boston Public Latin School, Boston University, West Virginia University, and graduated with his doctorate in medicine from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1948. He was a veteran of World War II with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Korean Conflict with the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps, where he served as a physician in Nagoya, Japan, during the American Occupation. In 1953, Waugh married Eileen A. Garrigan and they had Mark, Kathleen, and William. He held faculty positions at the Medical College of Georgia, the Kentucky Heart Association, and the University of Kentucky School of Medicine.
In the early 1970s, the Waughs moved to Greenville, North Carolina where he joined the staff of the Physiology Department at the Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University, and was the first doctor hired for the school. During his 30 years of service at ECU, Waugh served as Professor of Medicine, Professor of Physiology, Director of the Department of Clinical Sciences, and was Acting Chair of the Department of Medicine. His research interests included the control of kidney blood flow, sodium excretion and myogenic factors underlying vascular smooth muscle tone. Other areas of investigation included butanol vapor therapy in pulmonary edema and non-covalent antisickling agents for sickle cell hemoglobinopathy. Dr. Waugh retired in 2001 but was given "Professor Emeritus" status and continued to conduct original scientific research, publish professionally, and earned several patents for his work. He died in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky on 2012 July 18.
