Emma Sandberg was born 1874 July 23 in Finja, Sweden. She trained at the Lying-in Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden. The schooling consisted of nine months of general delivery techniques and an additional three months of the use of instruments. She practiced fulltime in Sweden until she immigrated to the United States in 1901. Once in the United States, Sandberg continued midwifery in Dekalb, Illinois until 1908 when she married John Vico and moved to Chicago where she practiced part-time until her only child, Vivian, was born in 1911. She then worked occasionally until 1920. Sandberg delivered her last baby, quite by chance, in 1946 when she was 72. She was visiting an old friend whose daughter-in-law was about to leave the house for a hospital birth, but the baby was ready for an early entrance. Emma Vico died 1959 January 26 in the Los Angeles area and is buried next to her husband in Hammond, Indiana.
