Wiley Warren Johnston was born 1885 May 11 to Arthur Cofield and Saluda Ann (Shearin) Johnston. Johnston moved to Manteo in 1914 directly out of medical school and joined Franklin P. Gates' practice. He was called into service in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War I, but returned to Manteo and resumed his practice with Gates afterwards. Johnston married Bess Swearngan, a registered nurse, and they had four children: Wiley Warren, Jean (Kirman), Laura (Dinwiddie) (Tillett), and Nancy (Beacham). Johnston died 1978 February 11.
