Matthew Moore Butler, M.D., was born in Sullivan County, Tennessee, on 1838 March 24. He attended the University of Nashville (1858-1859), Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia (1859-1860), Philadelphia School of Anatomy (1859-1860), University of New York Department of Medicine (1870-1871), and Bellevue Hospital Medical College (1870-1871). Dr. Butler was a Confederate field surgeon who helped amputate General Stonewall Jackson's arm in May of 1863. Later, Dr. Butler would be one of the men who signed the Articles of Surrender at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, on 1865 April 9. He practiced medicine in Bristol, Tennessee, where he died 1913 August 13.
Matthew M. Butler's son, Charles St. John Butler was born on 1875 March 1 in Bristol, Tennessee. He was in the U.S. Navy medical service from 1900 to 1939 and died on 1944 October 7 in Bristol, Tennessee.
The Butler Family Papers contains items related to physicians Matthew M. Butler and Charles S. Butler. Included are several of Matthew Butler's matriculation cards from medical classes attended at University of Nashville, Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia, Philadelphia School of Anatomy, University of New York, Bellevue Hospital Medical College, and University of New York Department of Medicine. One of Dr. Matthew M. Butler's pocket ledgers is also included. There are photographs of both Dr. Matthew M. Butler and Dr. Charles S. Butler and their family, as well as "Bristol Herald Courier" (Tennessee) newspaper article on Dr. Matthew M. Butler and his role of helping in the amputation of General Stonewall Jackson's arm in 1863.
