Evan Alexander Erwin was born on 1889 November 28 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina to Francis Lee and Margaret E. Erwin. The family lived in the small township of Steel Creek in Mecklenburg County and supported themselves by farming. Erwin attended college at the University of Georgia and graduated from the Medical School of South Carolina in 1912. He lived in New York for a short time while completing graduate work, but soon returned to North Carolina. On 1917 January 10, Erwin married Bessie N. Covington of Laurinburg, North Carolina and they later had two children, Evan Alexander Erwin Jr and Elizabeth N. Erwin. For more than thirty years, Dr. Erwin practiced medicine in Laurinburg. He also served on the Board of Health and worked as a county physician. Dr. Erwin died on 1944 September 28 at the age of sixty-six.
The Evan A Erwin Papers include images of Dr. Erwin dating from 1910 and 1912, an undated photograph, and his 1906 copy of Wellcome's Excerpta Therapeutica.
