Biographical/historical information

John Mahlon Phelps was born on 1906 August 8 to John L. and Ida Walker Phelps in Washington County, North Carolina. He graduated from Wake Forest College with a Bachelor of Science in 1928 and again in 1930 with a Bachelor of Science in Medicine. Following graduation, Phelps continued his medical training at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, where he was a member of the Chi chapter of the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity. He graduated with a Doctorate of Medicine in 1932. On 1932 July 14, Dr. Phelps received a certificate from the Board of Medical Examiners of North Carolina granting authorization to formally practice medicine in the state.

Phelps practiced medicine in Creswell, North Carolina for the majority of his career. In the 1930s, he married Caredwyn (Sheets) Phelps and raised two step-sons with her, Robert and Donald Sheets. During World War II, Dr. Phelps served in the Medical Corps from 1942 June 13 through 1944 November 23. He also served as a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives for the 1955, 1957, 1959, and 1961 sessions. Dr. Phelps died on 1961 March 26 in Creswell, North Carolina.


Scope and arrangement

The Dr. J.M. Phelps Papers document Dr. Phelps' time in medical school and his professional life as a doctor. The medical school series contains Dr. Phelps' notes from his classes, his junior case report, and examination reports. The professional life series includes Dr. Phelps' medical licenses, pamphlets he distributed to patients, blank prescription slips, blank birth and death certificates, calendars, and account books. The collection also holds Dr. Phelps' diplomas and various other certificates.
