This collection contains personal belongings of Dr. Joseph E. Wilson that include reprints from "Southern Medicine & Surgery," Volume 109, No. 4, April 1947, "The Country Doctor Museum" pamphlet (1971), "The Loves of the Angels" by Thomas Moore (1844), reprint of "Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam," photographs and tin-type photographs, and a Southern Medical Association membership card (1916).
Dr. Joseph Edwin Wilson was born 1857 July 21. He lived in Haywood County, N.C. and was a country doctor for 44 years. He died 1925 February 15.
This collection includes two poetry books, two University of Chapel Hill pamphlets, The Country Doctor Museum booklet, one medical booklet, seven tin-type images, two photographs, and one membership card. Pamphlets from Wm. DeB. MacNider, M.D., Kenan Research Professor of Pharmacology, of the University of North Carolina, "The Good Doctor" and "Braxton Bynum Lloyd." Both pamphlets are reprints from "Southern Medicine & Surgery," Volume 109, No. 4, April 1947. Personal poetry books include "The Loves of the Angels" by Thomas Moore (published in 1844) and a reprint of "Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam" (Edward FitzGerald translation). The medical booklet is a 1907 copy of "Thornton's Pocket Medical Formulary." Images in this collection are printed and tin-type formats. Images are of Dr. Joseph E. Wilson, Cordelia Wilson (wife), William Jesse Wilson (father), a child of Joseph and Cordelia, and the family home. Included in this collection is Dr. Wilson's Southern Medical Association membership card. The membership was received 1916 November 14 during the 10th Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA. The cost was $3 for the year. The Southern Medical Association was founded in 1906 as a scientific body of physicians dedicated to fostering the art and science of medicine through education.
