The Knights of Pythias is a fraternal secret society founded in 1864. The lodge's namesake, James Dobbin, had devoted his life to the practice of law and was highly respected at the local and national level. He was Speaker of the North Carolina House where he led an act that would lead to the construction of an insane asylum in Raleigh. In 1851, he was Chairman of the State delegation at the Democrat National Convention. In this position, his influence helped allow for the nomination of Franklin Pierce as the nominee for the Democratic Party. In 1852 he became a member of the cabinet as Secretary of the Navy.

The lodge remained active through July 1876 and was officially disorganized in December 1877 when it was merged with another lodge.
