This collection consists of a framed Evans & Cogswell lithograph facsimile [c. 1860] of the South Carolina Secession from the United States document and the framed front page of the February 28, 1863, issue of the Opelousas Courier [Louisiana] newspaper printed on wallpaper.


Biographical/historical information

After Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860, South Carolina called a state convention and delegates voted to remove the state of South Carolina from the union. Less than a year later, six more states secede from the union, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. In 1861, four more states seceded, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. South Carolina was the first state to secede from the union and precipitated in the beginning of the American Civil War.


Scope and arrangement

This collection contains two documents. The first is a lithograph facsimile [c. 1860] of the South Carolina Secession from the United States document located in an oversize folder. The second document is an Issue of the Opelousas Courier [Louisiana].
