Biographical/historical information

Van Ness Harwood (b. July 3, 1873, in Rutland, Vermont) was the son of Dr. Eleazer Van Ness Harwood and Emma Pitkin Harwood. After working as a reporter at the Rutland Herald, he was hired in 1899 by the New York World where he spent 25 years on the editorial staff. He left the World in 1925 in order to work in public relations handling publicity work for Mme. Marie Curie, Count Apponyi, George Russell, James W. Gerard, Col. William J. Donovan and the Women's National Committee for Hoover. He married first Marie Metzger with whom he had two children Ruth and Van Ness, Jr. Marie died in 1915 and he married Georgia Earle in 1920. He died June 11, 1933.

Scope and arrangement

The majority of the collection consists of clippings and correspondences relating to Van Ness Harwood. Included are photographs and articles that Van Ness Harwood took during her career.

November 1, 2011, 0.562 cubic feet; Papers (186?-2011, bulk 1911-1958) contain correspondence, clippings, newspapers and photographs related to Eleazer Van Ness Harwood, Jr.'s career as a newspaper journalist, especially with The World of New York City, and to his family life. Major topics of his journalistic career documented here are his coverage of the Wright Brothers' 1911 flights at Kitty Hawk, NC, and a visit by Madame Marie Curie to the United States in 1929 to receive a gift of one gram of radium for use in scientific research.
