Collection (ca. 1987 – 2004) of maps, photographs, correspondence, genealogical research on the descendents of Shadrack Allen, Sr., newspaper clippings, photocopies, and other printed sources, including transcriptions of manuscript materials, concerning President George Washington's historic "Southern Tour" of 1791, focusing especially on those events occurring in Pitt County, North Carolina.
The collection concerns research attempting to document key points traveled by George Washington during his visit to Pitt County, North Carolina in 1791.
The collection contains various materials, including photographic images, correspondence, genealogical research, gravestone records, maps, reports, clippings and photocopies. The photographs (2004) are of the Shadrack Allen, Sr. home site near "Crown Point", near Greenville, NC where Washington may have stayed. The correspondence (August 31, 2004 – December 8, 2004) consists of several e-mails regarding the Allen home site and family. The genealogical research and gravestone records (1960) concern the descendants of Shadrack, Allen, Sr. The maps (1994) depict various areas of eastern and coastal North Carolina. The reports pertain to George Washington's Pitt County tour and a brief history of the Penny Hill Plantation and the Thigpen Family (November 20, 1987). In addition, the collections includes a paper copy of the electronic edition (2001) of William Attmore's "Journal of a Tour to North Carolina," and a copy of Archibald Henderson's book, Washington's Southern Tour, 1791 (1923).
Also present is a document titled "Washington's Southern Tour of 1791," which documents Betty Ray McCain's public address (February 21, 1993) to the Capital City Club in Raleigh, N.C. for the North Carolina Society's Washington's Birthday Celebration. Also included is a copy of Robert Selig's "Putting the Washington-Rochambeau Trail on the Map" (2003) from the Spring 2003 issue of Flintlock & Powderhorn. Other articles include "By George" (8/26/2001) by Jane Welborn Hudson, discussing places in Pitt County where George Washington is known to have stopped during his visit, "Historical Society Elects Officers" (6/30/1960), about the election of new officers to the Pitt County Historical Society and an article from Pitt County Genealogical Quarterly (February, 1996) documenting the proceedings of the Grand Lodge, A.F. and A. Masons, Raleigh, on January 10, 1902 concerning George Washington's visit to Pitt County. Also present are a number of clippings from The Daily Reflector newspaper (September, 1960) covering Senator John F. Kennedy's stop in Pitt County during his Presidential campaign tour.
