Although there were organized music clubs in North Carolina before 1917, the accepted year that the North Carolina Federation of Music Clubs had its formal beginnings is 1917. One of the primary goals of the Federation was to promote music education, with goals of having a music teacher in every public school in the state. The Greenville Music Club was formed in 1948.
In 1974, Maxine Fountain published an exhaustive history of the North Carolina Federation of Music Clubs, titled ENTHUSIASTS ALL, utilizing archives and records from many clubs throughout the state and the NC State Archives in Raleigh. This history includes material from all local clubs within the state and provides information on past officers, chairmen, State Conventions and winners of scholarships and other awards. After the publication was completed, the material collected was placed in the Archives of the State of North Carolina and also in the Southern Collection of the Louis Round Wilson Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
As of 2017, the North Carolina Federation has eighteen Senior Clubs with 542 senior members and 240 Junior Clubs with a total of 3,735 junior members. The total membership is 4,277.
