"Duties of Boys to their Country" (13 February 1944) an address by Lt. Carl Forsyth of the U.S. Coast Guard Station at Elizabeth City, North Carolina, to the Boy Scouts of the Greater Albemarle and the citizens of the township of Elizabeth City, N.C., at Sheep School Auditorium; also includes the orders (11 January 1944) of his commanding officer, R. L. Burke, to deliver the talk.


Biographical/historical information

Carl Forsyth was born on 6 September 1903. He passed away on 4 September 1990 at the age of 86. He last resided in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Richard L. Burke was born in 1903 and raised in San Antonio, Texas. He entered the Coast Guard Academy in 1924 and graduated in 1927. During his time with the Coast Guard, he earned a reputation as a skilled aviator and commander. Burke was in command of the U.S. Coast Guard Station at Elizabeth City, North Carolina, from 1940 until 1944. He retired from the Coast Guard in 1958 and passed away in 1979.


Scope and arrangement

The collection contains two items relating to a speech given by Lt. Carl Forsyth of the U.S. Coast Guard. The first item is a memorandum to Forsyth from his commanding officer, Richard L. Burke, at the U.S. Coast Guard Station at Elizabeth City, North Carolina, about giving a talk, "Duties of Boys to their Country," to the Boy Scouts of the Greater Albemarle and the citizens of the township of Elizabeth City, N.C., at Sheep School Auditorium. The second item is a four page typescript with handwritten notes of Forsyth's speech.
