The USS Sterett (DD-407) was a US Navy destroyer ship commissioned on August 15, 1939. After various assignments during and after shakedown, the Sterett sailed to Hawaii in June of 1940 and arrived at Pearl Harbor on July 2. For 10 months, she operated out of Pearl Harbor. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the Sterett was used in various locations, including Iceland, Malta, and the Fiji Islands. The For the last three months of 1942 and all of 1943, the Sterett supported Allied forces throughout the Solomon Islands and the Bismarck Archipelago. In November of 1942, the ship took part in the naval Battle of Guadalcanal, where it disabled the Yūdachi, a Japanese destroyer. She was then attacked by the Japanese destroyer Terizuki. From January to March of 1944, the Sterett served in the Marianas and Marshalls. She returned to Pearl Harbor in April, and then returned to the Pacific. In 1945, she operated near Okinawa, Japan, where she was attacked by suicide planes.
