Files (1969-1994) belonging to retired ECU Biology professor Dr. Vincent J. Bellis pertaining to the environmental impact of the Chicod Creek (North Carolina) channelization, the East Carolina University Institute for Coastal and Marine Resources, North Carolina Academy of Science, and material concerning the Sierra Club of NC and other environmental groups. Included are correspondence, affidavits, reports, notes, conference proceedings, environmental studies, and newsletters.
Professor Vincent J. Bellis, an aquatic biologist, was born in Penn Yan, New York. He earned both his BS and MS from North Carolina State University and his PhD from the University of Western Ontario. Bellis was an associate professor of Biology at East Carolina University from 1966 to 1998. He also served as Professor Emeritus at ECU from 1989 until 1998.
The collection contains correspondence, affidavits, reports, notes, conference proceedings, programs, books, booklets, pamphlets, brochures, photographs, maps, diagrams and other miscellaneous materials regarding environmental studies, particularly those related to the stream channelization at Chicod Creek, NC. Organizations documented include North Carolina Academy of Science, Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc. (NRDC), Institute for Coastal and Marine Resources (ICMR) at East Carolina University, Water Resources Research Institute of UNC, Pitt (County) Soil and Water Conservation, North Carolina Entomological Society and North Carolina Chemical Society.
