Biographical/historical information

Thomas J. Jarvis was born in 1836 and died in 1915. He was the 44th governors of the United States of North Carolina from 1879 to 1885 and later served as the United States Senator from 1894 to 1895. He helped establish the East Carolina Teachers Training School to help educate "white men and women," as the charter stated. The school is now known as East Carolina University and open to everyone.


Scope and arrangement

This collection includes correspondence, accounts, and clippings relating Thomas J. Jarvis. The collection is in two archival boxes. The first box contains letters and a small ledger, and the second box contains railroad passes and a poem.

Legislature session, and a framed poem about the Centennial celebration (1881) of the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, VA, written by James Barron Hope and inscribed to Mrs. Governor Jarvis.
