Biographical/historical information
Doris M. Cromartie (Mrs. J. Henry Cromartie) was a leader among women in the Democratic Party in the 1950s and 1960s. From Charlotte, North Carolina, Mrs. Cromartie became interested in the Democratic Party during the mid-1950s. This collection documents her efforts to set up and expand Democratic Women's Clubs all over the state and her involvement as the Vice-Chairman of the Democratic Executive Committee and during the period 1960-1962. Mrs. Cromartie helped to write the by-laws for the Democratic Women's Clubs that were followed by all the clubs that she helped to organize.
Scope and arrangement
The Democratic Women of North Carolina Collection consists of photocopies of documents compiled by Doris M. (Mrs. Henry J.) Cromartie, of Charlotte, North Carolina, who was a member of the North Carolina Democratic Party's state executive committee. The collection includes unfiled parts of her correspondence files, her file on the first convention of the Democratic Women of North Carolina. In addition, the collection includes Mrs. Cromarties correspondence list of "key women" and North Carolina regional coordinators. It also includes manuscripts of articles on the Democratic Party and a copy of the Democratic Women's Club by-laws.
