Collection [1869] including correspondence, photocopies of genealogical notes, deeds, Bible records, a newspaper clipping, booklet pertaining to Cutchin family history.
The bulk of the collection consists of genealogical notes, Bible records, and monographs pertaining to Cutchin and related family histories, including the Braswell, Bryan, Avent, Spencer, Massey, and Hart families. These families are primarily, but not exclusively, from Edgecombe County, North Carolina. One monograph traces the Cutchin lineage to Isle of Wight County, Virginia, and two others describe the ancient Irish descent of the Bryan family and English descent of the Massey's from the time of William the Conqueror. A booklet entitled Cutchin, by Spencer Cutchin Paschall, traces the family history to the ancient Scottish Clan of MacDonald and the Norsemen, as well as giving biographical sketches of Cutchin ancestors.
Two items of particular interest from the Civil War period are a sketch of James MacGilbra Cutchin's experiences in the Confederate army, entitled "A Brief History of the Soldier Life of J. M. Cutchin," and a newspaper clipping describing the blockade running adventures of Laura and Josiah Pender, of Tarboro and Beaufort, N.C.
One miscellaneous deed (1869) records the sale and transfer of one acre of land to T. T. Thorn and others from James C. Knight for the use and benefit of the Methodist-Protestant Congregation in Edgecombe County.
