Collection of Loftin and Carr family genealogies.


Biographical/historical information

Leonard Loftin (ca. 1654-1720) was born in Pennsylvania and moved to North Carolina in 1688. Leonard married Elizabeth and together that had seven children, six making it to adulthood. He and his wife lived in Chowan Precinct near Albermrle Bay until his wifes death in 1716. Leonard then moved to Craven Precinct of Bath County after selling his plantation.

Joseph Carr (1710-1780) left Ireland and arrived in Wilmington, NC in 1748. He lived near Maxwell's Swamp on a branch of the North East River. Joesph sailed with Captain Beverett and married his widowed wife after Captain Beverett was lost at sea. Together Joseph and Barbara Gastor Beverett had three sons, William, John, and James, and one daughter, Nancy.


Scope and arrangement

This collection contains genealogical histories of the Loftin and Carr families of North Carolina and neighboring states.

The Loftin genealogical history was compiled by Mrs. Gertrude Bagley Creasy. It gives information on the background of the Loftin name and genealogy of the family from Leonard Loftin's arrival about 1688 in Chowan County, N.C. to twentieth century families living throughout the South. Other connected families included are: Rountree, Cox, La Roque, Sutton, Miller, Parker and Becton.

The History of the Car family of Duplin County, N.C. was compiled by Jacob Wesley Carr and James Ozborn Carr. It traces the descendants of Joseph Carr of Ireland, who settled in Duplin County around 1748, to twentieth century families living in the area. Connected families mentioned are: Garrison, Turner, Southerland, Newton, Boney, and Pearsall.
