Papers (1905-1906) of Tarboro, NC tobacconist who traveled to Japan and China, 1905-1930, consisting of two diaries and one letter.


Biographical/historical information

Richard Henry Gregory, tobacconist of Tarboro, N.C., recounts his first trip to China (1905-1906), where he made his home until retirement in 1935.


Scope and arrangement

Gregory gives a brief chronological account of his trip to and journey in China, commenting on soldiers in Tokyo, the stopping of their ship by Japanese gunboats, tobacco crop and prices, opium smoking, magistrates, physical conditions, and various temples.

The letter (January 12, 1906) from Shanghai mentions the coming Chinese New Year and the English atmosphere of the city.
