Biographical/historical information

Colonel Charles Hutchinson was one of the earliest settlers in Dorchester County, Maryland. He was one of the Majesties Counsel for the Maryland Colony during King William and Queen Mary's reign. Colonel Hutchinson had one child, a daughter, named Dorothy. He sent her to England to receive an education and met a man named John Rider, who she later married. Together they had one son, John Rider, and on their return to England Dorothy and her husband died at sea. John Rider, the infant son, was raised by Colonel Hutchinson. When John Rider became an adult, he married Anne Hicks and together they had a daughter named Dorothy. Dorothy married Colonel John Henry, and together they had several children, one daughter named Charlotte Henry, who later married William Winder. William Winder's great grandfather was John Winder who settled in Princess Anne, Somerset County.

Scope and arrangement

This collection is made up entirely of biographical and genealogical material pertaining to several North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland families.

Winder family material includes a history of the Winder family in Cumberland County, England and Baltimore, Maryland. This history is complete with a genealogical chart and a defense of the career and character of Civil War General John Henry Winder, commander of Andersonville (Georgia) prison. Closely related to the Winders are notes on the Henry family, which came from Ireland to Maryland.

Also of interest is a rather voluminous "Extract from Family Record" prepared by R. C. Martin. This file consists of genealogical notes on such eastern North Carolina families as the Bryans (William Bryan, Needham Bryan, John Herritage Bryan, etc.), Herritages, Whitfields, Blounts, Smiths, and other related families. Of particular note are biographical sketches on John Herritage Bryan and his son, Henry Ravencroft Bryan.
