Itimous Thaddeus Valentine, Sr. was born in Nash County in 1887. A graduate of Guilford College and the Wake Forest College Law School, Judge Valentine practiced law in Nash County, served in World Wars I and II, and was an associate justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. During World War II, he attained the rank of lieutenant colonel and was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service in the India Burma theater.
Included in the collection are five issues of The Tar Baby, an armed forces newspaper published on board the USS Santa Teresa during its homeward voyage in March 1919. The Tar Baby contains news items, messages from the commander, poems, jokes, and other articles of interest to military personnel.
Other material includes a photograph of Lt. Colonel Valentine in uniform; a Thanksgiving menu for the U.S. Forces in the India-Burma Theater (1944); V-mail from India; and clippings from The Nashville Graphic (Nashville, N.C.), concerning activities of Judge and Mrs. Valentine.
