Papers (1776-1860) including deeds, and a promissory note concerning Halifax County (N.C.) property.
Halifax County, nicknamed the "Cradle of History", is a county in the Coastal Plain region of North Carolina. It is one of the oldest counties in the state, being formed in 1758. The Roanoke River helped shape the county's history and geography. It was originally a part of Edgecomb County, but Halifax separated from the county in 1758 and Halifax became the county seat.
The House Family Papers belonged to the father of Mrs. Clifford J. Cocowitch. The collection is made up primarily of land deeds from Halifax County, N.C. There is, however, one deed from Martin County.
There are numerous land deeds held by William Legget of Halifax County dealing primarily with property along Deep Creek in that county. Also included is a promissory note held by John H. Ivey against William Legget for $3,300 (1856).
