Papers (1890-1903) including correspondence, receipts, shipping records, church minutes, advertisements, etc. Collections by the agent for the Norfolk and Southern Railroad Company in Washington (NC)
Many of the items in this collection concern J. A. Burgess, an agent for the Norfolk and Southern Railroad Company.
This collection consists of papers which accumulated in a Washington, N.C., office building over a number of years through successive use by various companies.
Most of the correspondence deals with the shipment of merchandise, tracers for misplaced goods, and complaints for overcharge or delay. One letter includes a price list for coffins (1894). Other correspondence concerns expenses for the spring term at Greensboro Female College and mentions some of the subjects being taught (1900).
Other items include shipping papers of the Styron Transportation Company, which operated the steamer Aurora (1894), and receipts for the Norfolk and Southern Railroad Company (1893-1894). Also among the financial papers are various receipts, invoices, and contracts (1890).
Among the miscellaneous items are minutes of the North Carolina Christian Missionary Convention (1891), advertisements, and tickets for the steamer Aurora.
