Memoir (1852-1924) of the daughter of a prominent Pitt County (NC) farmer, etc.
Biographical/historical information
Victoria Louise Pendleton (1838-1931) was the daughter of James Clark, a prominent Pitt County farmer. She entered the Warrenton Female Collegiate Institute in 1852 and graduated in 1854. In 1869, she opened a school exclusively for girls in Warrenton. She was one of Warrenton's most respected and admired women in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Scope and arrangement
The bulk of this collection consists of a memoir (1852-1924) of Victoria Louise Pendleton. In writing her memoir, Mrs. Pendleton draws upon not only her own recollections but also sources such as newspaper articles, histories, and reports.
The memoir deals almost exclusively with descriptions of and incidents involving Confederate Civil War generals; North Carolina educators and governors; and the schools, churches, and famous homes in Warrenton. Subjects of particular interest include Generals Robert E. Lee and Joseph Johnston, Governors Zebulon B. Vance and Charles B. Aycock, Charles McIver, and Rose O'Neal Greenhow. The Civil War and post-Civil War activities are given for each of these personalities.
Also included in this collection is a program of the play Ester, the Beautiful Queen, presented in Warrenton, N. C., in 1894; and genealogical notes on the descendants of William and Mary Hayes Plummer of Gloucester Co., Va., and Warren Co., N.C.
