This is the first bookmobile owned and operated by Sheppard Memorial Library, Greenville, NC. It was bought with funds raised by the citizens of Greenville in order to provide public library service to Pitt County residents. The lettering on the side of the vehicle read: "Gift from the People of Greenville to the People of Pitt County."The unit cost $2200 and was a Chevrolet 1/2 ton truck customized into a bookmobile. It began service on April 12, 1948.
