This is the 1100 block of N Greene St. The Pure Oil sign is in front of what was then Clarence Waters Service Station and later became Darwin Waters. The brick building was Guaranty Bank which was acquired by Wachovia. The center white building was Dot & Jean's Grocery, later used by Sam Price for his dish business.
The brick building on the right forefront is a bank. I can identify "Bank & Trust"....but not sure if it is Guaranty Bank & Trust Co.
Before seeing any of the comments, I was thinking the same thing --- that's across the river, not downtown.
This collection is fantastic! Althought the caption to the photo above says "downtown shopping center", isn't this is North Greene Street, across the river? I think one of the buildings is the famous Darwin Water's, better known as DW's, a late night eatery for intoxicated college students. They prepared the food right beside the mufflers and tire changing equipment, but no one seemed to mind!
More likely north Greene Street.
This is North Greene Street (across the Tar River) it is not downtown.

I lived there in the early 70s. Many nights ended with a delicious meal at Darwin Water's gas station. The hot dogs were to die for & so were the flank steak sandwiches..YUM!!!
