The lady is actually "looping" a bundle of tobacco on the stick. Notice the twisting motion of her wrist. Looping took longer than stringing, but made the bundle more secure. Some women "strung" the tobacco, wrapping the tobacco twine around the head of the bundle and sliding it onto the stick. Either way, caution was taken to insure a safe stick of tobacco was put into the hot barn. The farmer could not afford to have leaves hanging loose. If one fell on the hot furnace or flues, a barn full of tobacco could be lost in five minutes!
