The unsaved (non-Christians) or new converts knelt at the mourners bench seeking a deeper experience from God. It was an intentional isolation from the general congregation where one could exhibit that they were "standing in the need of prayer." Similar to how modern Christians use the altar in Churches now. This gave them a key opportunity to be ministered to by the preacher or other leaders who were deemed "spiritually mature."
