Welcome to East Carolina University. I'm Steve Ballard, chancellor of this great university. All of us at ECU are proud to be the opportunity university, committed to the success of our students and to the quality of the state of North Carolina. I hope you feel the pride that we have in our university and become quickly engaged in the pirate nation. Every year thousands of students identify their goals and realize their dreams at ECU. Ron Clark came here to be a teacher and became the National Teacher of the Year, and now runs one of the most successful schools in the country. Ruth Shaw grew up in Greenville, received two degrees here, and became the chief executive officer of Duke Energy Company. Ronnie Barnes came to ECU with an interest in sports, received a degree in sports medicine, and today he is known as the best trainer in the National Football League. And Carol Mabe came to ECU because she could afford it. She majored in art and design, learned leadership skills, and eventually became an executive officer for Russell Athletics, and now as a member of the ECU Board of Trustees. One of the most important responsibilities of any public university is to train tomorrow's leaders. That is our number one job here at ECU. We do this in three ways. First, we provide great classrooms so that each student has the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in today's world. Secondly, we encourage community engagement and service learning. Last year, over 11,000 ECU students did service learning projects that contributed to the quality of their neighborhoods and their communities. Third, we provide leadership training for our students, so you are ready for leadership and confident in your ability to lead. Welcome to ECU. We're glad you're a pirate. Find your dreams. Become a leader. It all starts here at East Carolina University.
