Red cross cap

Title
Red cross cap
Description
The American Red Cross, founded in 1881, focuses on disaster relief, public health, and the casualties of war. This cap was manufactured by Kay’s Cap in New York City. It was worn by a Red Cross nurse during the early 1900s. It is not known how or where this nurse served, but there are many possibilities. Red Cross nurses served their country during World War I and World War II, both overseas and on the home front. They also provided aid to victims of natural disasters, epidemics, and even to those who found themselves unemployed during the Depression era. Although the Red Cross is well known today for its work with blood donation, the organization did not begin its blood programs until after World War II.
