First in Flights

Record #:
9650
Abstract:
Think flight in North Carolina, and most people think of the Wright Brothers. However, the state can claim a number of aviation firsts. In the early 1870s, John Henry Gatling experimented with flight, and Luther Paul was designing a helicopter in the early 20th-century. Alton Stewart was an early barnstormer, and Gus Shinn made the first landing at the South Pole.
