"A novel program began in the 1940s sent classical musicians into rural towns and counties across North Carolina. Its goal: to provide music education for all children." In 1951, the symphony was logging 8,500 miles annually with a subsidy of $15,000. that number had increased to nearly $1 million by 1978.
