Abstract:
Ralph Lane, a native of England, and professional soldier, was invited by Sir Walter Raleigh to command an expedition to America in 1585. Lane served as governor of the first colony attempted by the English in America. He reacted violently with the local Indians, killing their Chief. Lane left the colony and returned to England, where he performed a series of menial military appointments. He took a post in Ireland, where he was knighted by the Lord Deputy of Ireland in 1593. He was badly wounded in an Irish Rebellion in 1594.
