Abstract:

Sparta, county seat of Alleghany County, has twice risen from devastating fires - in 1933 and 1986. Christmas trees and the nation's largest smoking-pipe factory bolster the economy. Also contributing are many shops, outdoor activities, and the town's old-time mountain feel, which attracts tourists.
