Abstract:
On Aug. 22, 1777 in Pitt County, Thomas Clarke, who supported the King and England, got into a disagreement with Nathan Mayo over the war. In anger, Clarke tried to shoot Mayo, but his gun misfired. This gave Mayo time to run into his house and grab a gun, and came out and shot Clarke. Clarke died in about a half hour.
