This profile of a transgender man follows the story of Mitchell, the child of a preacher. Born Betsy, Mitchell kept the truth of himself hidden throughout childhood, adulthood, marriage and even motherhood, until his own mother’s death from cancer. Not being able to continue with the secrecy anymore, Mitchell came out as gay to his husband and kids and then transgender to his elementary school where he taught. As of the writing of this article, Mitchell and his sister Joy are both fighting their own battle with breast cancer.
