Abstract:
Farmville’s story begins in the 1830’s and 40’s when several small communities with stores sprung up in the Farmville area. A post office was established there in 1848, and the area was named Farmville by John H. Hines. According to the Gilmer Civil War map dated 1864, Farmville consisted of a school house and several farms with the first general store being built about 1867. Farmville was incorporated around 1870. Dr. David S. Morrill recalled early Farmville as a crossroads community that had 12 houses, a church, a school, three or four stores, and two bars. Farmville continued to grow, more stores opened and finally electricity was turned on on Aug. 31, 1916.
